call for repertory [Mar. 4th, 2008|09:52 am]

My renaissance trio is looking for music about/evoking/related to death or the grave. Anyone have any suggestions? Pavan Funereal and 3 Ravens are already on our list. There are also about a billion chanson that play on le petit mort, but I dont think we want to do more than a set or two of those.

There is a gorgeous set of seven four-part settings by John Dowland entitled "Lamentatio Henrici Noel" or something close to that. The original poetry is dreadful, but the tunes are ravishingly beautiful. Oxfird University Press publish them with different texts as "Seven Hymn Tunes" in two volumes.

The Seven Penitential Psalms of Orlando di Lasso are also lovely and work well instrumentally or with a mix of instruments and voices.

I missed the word "trio." Sorry!

Re: oops...

Actually, the other members of the trio play guitar and harp as well as recorder, so if we use those they can cover more than one line, so 4-part (or 5-part) pieces are a possibility. I'll look into those, thanks!
